The Lakeville Fire Department is preparing to take a major step forward in emergency response, announcing plans to bring its own ambulance into service in the near future.

Department leaders say the addition will allow crews to provide faster, more direct medical care to residents while strengthening overall coverage in the community.

Currently, Lakeville firefighters already respond to medical calls, providing immediate assessment and life-saving care before additional transport units arrive. The department is staffed with six full-time EMT-Basics, along with part-time EMTs and Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), all of whom are also trained firefighters.

Officials say that cross-training allows crews to handle a wide range of emergencies, from fires to medical incidents, while ensuring patients receive care as quickly as possible.

“Emergency care is a coordinated effort,” the department said in a statement. “From EMRs to EMTs and paramedics, every level plays a critical role in those first moments that can make all the difference.”

In addition to serving their own coverage area, Lakeville crews also regularly assist neighboring departments, including South Bend, with medical calls and patient transport.

The addition of a basic-level ambulance is expected to:

Improve response times
Increase availability of emergency resources
Allow for quicker patient transport when needed

Fire officials say the ambulance will be placed into service soon, marking a significant investment in public safety for the community.
