South Bend Fire Department investigators spent Tuesday collecting evidence and reviewing camera footage from surrounding buildings as they began investigating the Stadium Flats fire.

Investigators are currently waiting for the damaged crane at the site to be safely removed before they can begin sifting through the rubble.

A state fire investigator is now assisting SBFD as an additional resource. The department said the investigation remains under SBFD control and that bringing in state assistance is a normal step for a large and complex fire scene.

K9 Teams Used in Investigation

A cadaver K9 searched the site as a precaution and found no indication anyone was inside.

An accelerant-detection K9 is also expected to examine the debris and may help investigators identify areas where samples should be collected for additional testing.

SBFD emphasized that it remains too early to determine whether anything about the fire is suspicious.

Officials said the investigation could take several days, weeks or longer to complete.
