The South Bend Police Department is investigating an incident near Eddy Street Commons that left a woman wounded and a South Bend Police officer injured Saturday evening.
Police said that around 7:30 p.m. on September 19, the Notre Dame Police Department advised South Bend Police that a male had reportedly been seen with a firearm and pointing it at people.
An individual matching the description was located at the south end of Eddy Street Commons, but police said he was not found to be armed during their interaction with him.
While approximately 20 South Bend Police officers were working in the Eddy Street Commons area and responding to the call, officers heard a single gunshot near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard.
Officers located a woman with a non-life-threatening wound to her leg. She was transported to a hospital for treatment.
A South Bend Police officer was also injured. Police said preliminary evidence suggests the officer’s injury may have been caused by a ricochet from the gunfire. The officer was initially treated at the scene for a non-life-threatening injury.
South Bend Police worked with the Notre Dame Police Department and St. Joseph County Police Department to secure the area surrounding Eddy Street Commons and Notre Dame’s campus following the incident.
The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate.
