Star City Fire Department said crews were dispatched at approximately 2:25 p.m. to a reported basement fire at 3589 E 900 S. As additional information became available, firefighters determined the basement was part of the feed mill itself.

Winamac Fire Department was quickly requested for a full assist, followed by Royal Center Fire Department for tanker support and manpower.

As the fire progressed and the magnitude of the incident became clear, additional resources were requested. Logansport Fire Department responded with an aerial ladder truck, manpower and a tanker, along with Cass County EMA.

The response eventually involved more than 10 fire departments, EMS, law enforcement, emergency management, INDOT, Cass County Traffic Control, dispatchers, businesses, families and other individuals assisting behind the scenes.

Fire departments involved included Star City, Winamac, Francesville, Logansport, Cass County District 1, Lucerne, Wayne Township, Buffalo, Royal Center, Bass Lake and Kewanna.

Star City Fire Department said Pulaski County EMS remained on scene throughout the call, assisting with tanker management, scene safety and hydration stations. EMS also provided assistance when a firefighter needed care.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, Winamac Police Department, INDOT and Cass County Traffic Control assisted with traffic and scene safety, while Pulaski County EMA provided additional support and resources.

Star City Fire Department also recognized Pulaski County Dispatch for handling the large amount of radio traffic, resource requests and information throughout the incident.

Gerlach Farms and Ruff Family Farms allowed firefighters to use irrigation wells to fill tankers during the response.

Water, ice and Gatorade were provided by Sherry Fagner, the American Red Cross, Jason Fagner, Brandi and Mikey Shorter, Marissa Dahn, RayeAnn Stamper and the Pulaski County 4-H pork shack. Riley Tiede delivered a meal to the fire station.

Ryan Layer with LR Excavating also brought heavy equipment to the scene, which Star City Fire Department said saved crews countless hours of work.
