If you get your prescription medications through Indiana Medicaid, some changes are coming in 2027 that could affect how certain medications are covered or approved.
The Indiana Health Coverage Programs announced updates to its preferred drug lists and prescription approval requirements on October 29. The changes will take effect January 1, 2027.
The updates involve several types of medications, including treatments for diabetes, ADHD, mental health conditions and birth control.
What medications are changing?
Some of the more recognizable medications affected include:
Insulin: Fiasp will move from preferred to nonpreferred status, although current users will be allowed to continue treatment. Certain Humalog insulin pens and Toujeo products will become preferred.
ADHD medications: Vyvanse chewable tablets will become nonpreferred, while lisdexamfetamine chewable tablets will become preferred.
Birth control: Kyleena, Mirena, Miudella and Skyla will all move from preferred to nonpreferred status.
Mental health treatment: Spravato will move from nonpreferred to preferred status.
The state is also adding eight medications to its Preferred HIV Agents List and updating rules for several other types of prescriptions.
What does this mean for patients?
Indiana Medicaid uses preferred drug lists to identify medications favored under its prescription coverage policies.
When a medication moves to nonpreferred status, it does not automatically mean patients will lose access to it. However, different approval requirements may apply.
Some medications also have rules requiring additional authorization, limits on prescribed quantities or documentation that other treatments have been tried.
The exact requirements can depend on the medication and the Medicaid plan.
What should patients do?
Anyone receiving prescriptions through Indiana Medicaid can review the updated medication lists to see whether their prescriptions are affected.
Patients with questions about their medications or whether additional approval will be needed can contact their pharmacy or Medicaid health plan.
The changes were approved by Indiana’s Drug Utilization Review Board on October 16 and are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027.
