The Town of Culver will begin flushing hydrants on Monday, November 16, and residents may notice temporary changes in their water’s color.

According to the town, water may appear rusty or orange during the flushing process. While the discoloration may be unpleasant, town officials say the water remains safe to use.

If discoloration occurs, residents can usually clear it by running cold water from the faucet closest to their water main for 3-5 minutes. An outside faucet may also be used to clear the line.

The town recommends avoiding washing white clothing, towels or bedding while the water is discolored to prevent staining.

Hydrant flushing is performed twice a year to remove naturally occurring minerals, including iron and manganese, that settle inside water mains. The process helps maintain water pressure, extend the life of the water mains and prevent discoloration.

For residents who want to learn more about the process, the town has shared a video explaining how hydrant flushing works and why it is necessary.
