What Is a Tornado Emergency?

Starke County IN

March 11, 2026 at 5:12:38 PM

A Tornado Emergency was issued Tuesday night as a confirmed tornado moved toward Knox, Indiana, marking a rare and extremely serious weather alert from the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana.

A Tornado Emergency is the most urgent type of tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service. While it is technically issued as part of a Tornado Warning, the wording is only used in the most dangerous situations when a large, destructive tornado is confirmed and threatening a populated area.

When Is a Tornado Emergency Issued?

The National Weather Service uses Tornado Emergency wording when several critical factors are present:

• A large, destructive tornado has been confirmed, often by radar debris signature or trained spotters.

• The tornado is moving toward or through a populated area.

• Catastrophic damage is likely or already occurring.

Because of the life-threatening danger associated with these storms, the message accompanying a Tornado Emergency urges people in the warning area to take cover immediately.

Residents should move to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows, and remain there until the warning expires.

A Rare Alert in Northern Indiana

Tornado Emergencies are extremely rare, and the alert issued Tuesday night was only the third time the National Weather Service office in Northern Indiana has used the designation.

The three Tornado Emergencies issued by the office are:

Date Location

August 24, 2016 Kokomo, Indiana

May 7, 2024 Union City, Michigan (Branch County)

March 10, 2026 Knox, Indiana

Each of these events involved confirmed tornadoes posing an immediate threat to populated communities.

Why the Wording Matters

Meteorologists use the Tornado Emergency designation to communicate the highest level of urgency possible. The goal is to make it immediately clear that the situation is life-threatening and requires immediate action.

When a Tornado Emergency is issued, it means:

    • A tornado is confirmed on the ground
    • Severe damage is likely
    • Lives are at immediate risk

Officials stress that warnings using this language should be treated as a call to act immediately to protect yourself and your family.
