Several tornadoes and other severe weather impacts were reported across northern Indiana Tuesday evening as strong storms moved through the region.

Preliminary reports released by the National Weather Service Northern Indiana show multiple confirmed tornado sightings in Starke County between approximately 9:08 PM and 9:37 PM.

The first tornado report came around 9:08 PM, when a trained storm spotter photographed a tornado just northwest of San Pierre as it entered Starke County.

Additional tornado sightings were reported shortly afterward, including:

  • 2 ESE of English Lake around 9:27 PM
  • 3 miles north of Toto around 9:35 PM
  • 2 SW of Brems around 9:37 PM

Emergency management officials and trained spotters also reported damage in the area, including numerous trees down, a grain dryer blown over, and a barn destroyed near State Road 8 west of the Starke County Airport.

Storm reports were not limited to tornadoes.

Other severe weather reports included:

  • 0.70 inch hail near La Crosse and Rolling Prairie
  • 60 MPH wind gust recorded at South Bend International Airport
  • 51 MPH marine wind gust near Michigan City
  • 44 MPH wind gust near Benton Harbor, Michigan

Most of the tornado reports were submitted by trained spotters, amateur radio operators, and emergency management officials.

The National Weather Service will likely conduct storm surveys to determine the number, intensity, and exact paths of the tornadoes that occurred during the storms.

Additional reports may still be added as damage assessments continue across the region.
