Monterey Official: Rumor Town Tried to Block Dollar Store Is False

A rumor claiming Monterey Town Council tried to prevent a dollar store from coming to town is not true, according to Town Council President Doug Denton.

Denton said claims that he—or the town—did not want a dollar store and actively worked to keep one out are “100% not true.”

Instead, Denton said town leaders spent several months working to attract a dollar store to Monterey. He said there were ongoing discussions with developers, but the project ultimately did not move forward because the town did not meet the company’s business model requirements.

“The truth is that we worked hard to get a dollar store to come here, not the other way around,” Denton said.

Denton added that the rumor is an example of false or misleading information being shared publicly.

Town officials say they will continue efforts to bring new businesses to Monterey moving forward.
