Federal Judge Blocks Trump Order Targeting NPR, PBS Funding
March 31, 2026 at 8:13:00 PM

A federal judge has blocked an executive order issued by former President Donald Trump that aimed to cut off federal funding to NPR and PBS.
U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ruled the order was unlawful, stating it violated First Amendment protections by targeting media organizations based on perceived viewpoints.
The executive order, signed in 2025, directed federal agencies to identify and eliminate funding for public broadcasters, citing concerns over alleged bias.
However, the court determined the government cannot restrict funding as a form of retaliation against speech it disagrees with.
What this means:
- The executive order cannot be enforced at this time
- The ruling centers on constitutional protections, not funding policy alone
What it does NOT mean:
- It does not automatically restore funding to NPR or PBS
- Broader funding cuts previously approved by Congress still remain in effect
The decision is expected to face appeals, leaving the long-term future of public broadcasting funding uncertain.
